- Empowering Health Workers

Climate change is increasingly affecting human health, healthcare delivery, and the ability of health systems to protect vulnerable communities. From rising temperatures and flooding to the spread of infectious diseases and disruptions in access to essential medicines, the effects of climate change are becoming more evident in communities across Nigeria. Health workers are often at the frontline of these challenges, making climate change education an important step towards building a more resilient healthcare system.

At TEAF-CHE, we recognise that equipping health professionals with the knowledge and skills to understand the relationship between climate change and human health is essential to strengthening climate-resilient healthcare. Through targeted educational sessions, we are working to improve awareness, encourage climate-informed healthcare practices, and empower health workers to respond effectively to emerging climate-related health challenges.

#### Educating Pharmacists on the Health Impacts of Climate Change

On 2 October 2026, TEAF-CHE educated 15 pharmacists at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ovwian, Delta State, on the health impacts of climate change.

The session focused on improving participants' understanding of how changing climatic conditions affect human health and the delivery of healthcare services. It highlighted the links between climate change and health outcomes, including the increased risks associated with extreme heat, flooding, changing patterns of infectious diseases, and other environmental health challenges.

The training also emphasised the important role pharmacists play in responding to climate-related health risks. As accessible healthcare professionals and essential members of the healthcare team, pharmacists can help patients understand climate-sensitive health risks, provide appropriate health advice, and support the safe and effective use of medicines during climate-related emergencies.

Climate change can also affect pharmaceutical supply chains, the storage and stability of medicines, and patients' access to essential treatments when extreme weather events disrupt transportation and healthcare facilities. Understanding these connections enables pharmacists to contribute more effectively to patient safety, preparedness, and the continuity of healthcare services.

By engaging pharmacists in climate-health education, TEAF-CHE aims to strengthen the capacity of healthcare professionals to recognise climate-related health challenges and incorporate climate considerations into their professional practice.

#### Reaching Health Workers Through Online Webinar

Our commitment to climate-health education also extends beyond physical training sessions.

On 30th May 2026, TEAF-CHE organized an online educational session on theOverview of Climate Change, reaching more than 60 health workers.

The session introduced participants to the fundamentals of climate change, including its causes, major drivers, and implications for human health and healthcare delivery. It explored how environmental changes influence health risks and why climate change should be recognised as an important public health concern rather than solely an environmental issue.

Participants were introduced to the connections between climate change and health challenges such as heat-related illnesses, changing patterns of malaria and other climate-sensitive diseases, flooding, water contamination, and the disruption of essential healthcare services. The session also highlighted the importance of awareness, prevention, preparedness, and collaboration between the health and environmental sectors.

By using an online learning format, TEAF-CHE was able to engage health workers beyond a single physical location, demonstrating the potential of digital education to expand access to climate-health knowledge and support wider professional engagement.

The session reinforced the need for health workers to understand the climate-related risks facing the communities they serve and to recognise their role in promoting public health, protecting vulnerable populations, and strengthening healthcare system resilience.

#### Our Impact So Far

Through these two educational activities, TEAF-CHE has reached health professionals across different learning settings, supporting greater awareness of the relationship between climate change and human health.

**Key highlights include:**

- **15 pharmacists educated** on the health impacts of climate change at FMC Ovwian, Delta State, on 2 October 2026.
- **Over 60 health workers reached** through an online session on the overview of climate change on 31 May 2026.
- **Two educational sessions delivered** using in-person and online learning formats.
- **Increased opportunities for climate-health awareness** among healthcare professionals who play vital roles in patient care, disease prevention, and healthcare delivery.

We will continue to promote awareness, strengthen professional capacity, and encourage collaboration across the health and climate sectors. By equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge to understand and respond to climate-related health challenges, we aim to contribute to a healthcare system that is better prepared to protect lives, maintain essential services, and support healthier, more resilient communities.

At TEAF-CHE, we are working towards a future where every health worker is equipped to understand the health impacts of climate change and contribute to building a climate-resilient health system.
